Building for the long term means creating a place for new possibilities to emerge: more sustainable, more generous, fairer.
Located in the heart of the Lyon-Gerland Biodistrict, the WHO Academy campus is a showcase for the transparency and exceptional nature of its programme, a veritable showcase of transmission at the service of health professionals and workers from all over the world.
Reflecting the WHO’s commitment to sustainability, this global centre of excellence for continuing medical education has been designed according to three guiding principles: sobriety of design, economy of materials and flexibility of use.
This quest for balance is based in particular on bioclimatic design and an adapted and adaptable structure, but also on materials chosen for their intrinsic qualities, combining durability with technical, acoustic and visual performance.
The volumetric shape of the building is inspired by the image of a crunchy apple, with a smooth, protective envelope: a bioclimatic double skin that functions like the epidermis of the skin, and a more open façade offering tiered terraces.
It also reinforces the Academy’s experiential dimension.
Visible from the street, the agora is a real place of life, a catalyst for ideas and communication. The beating heart of the campus, it serves the Academy’s emblematic programme with several health emergency simulation rooms of different sizes. Designed to accommodate a variety of immersive experiences, they are adapted to different environments, climates, weather and sound conditions.
The Academy will also house interactive training rooms and the WHO’s Lyon offices.
In harmony with the building, the landscaping project, which has a high environmental value, encourages the harmonious integration of the campus into its urban and historical environment.
The whole project is part of an environmental approach designed to meet current needs and anticipate future developments.
