The Mazarin Canal project has just completed an ambitious Public Flood Protection Programme. Located at the tip of the peninsula in the Albert 1er Square in Charleville-Mezieres, the project comprised the installation of a hydraulic valve, new contouring of the downstream and upstream banks and redevelopment of an adjoining square.
The heritage and sensitive nature of this town centre space located in front of large public works, military and hydraulic structures, enabled to develop a landscape project complementry to its technical and functional components.
On the right bank, the civil engineering elements of the new works converse at water level with the remains of ancient fortifications and redevelop the adjoining square. On the left bank, the canal and its valve wrap around the existing hydroelectric microstation. The riverfront facade of the Place de la Prefecture is extended and redefined by the creation of a belvedere that displays the new development as well as the historic character of the site.
